September 2015 Meeting

Our meeting in September started with the usual singing of 'Jerusalem', followed by God Save the Queen, in honour of the longest reign by a British monarch.

A coffee and cake morning was held at Gill Brown's during the Summer, and we were informed that it had raised £187 which is to help pay for our special birthday party held in June. Many thanks to Gill for hosting  and everyone who helped or attended the event. Two outing reports followed, the first to Hidcote and the other to Renishaw Hall and Gardens. Some of our members are not able to take part in these visits but it is interesting to hear about them.

GILL'S COFFEE MORNING

We were reminded of a Blythe Group meeting on Thursday 29th October to be held at Abbotts Bromley Village Hall. This will be a group meeting with a difference, we will be having a 100 years of NFWI 'Celebration Party', including a special cake, wine, a buffet and a 'super' raffle.

Our speaker this week was John Colley who showed a 16mm film. This was a popular and economical  gauge of film. It was generally used for non-theatrical film making or for low budget motion pictures. It also existed as a popular amateur or home movie making format for several decades, alongside 8mm film and, later, Super 8 mm film.

The first short film was entitled The Sport Parade and demonstrated all types of sport on wheels. It was distributed by the Rank Film Library. The second film was about Winston Churchill, filmed from his family home at Blenheim Palace to the part he played in World War 2. The final films were filmed in America and featured some work by the Hollywood movie director and musical choreographer Busby Berkeley. Berkeley devised elaborate musical production numbers that often involved complex geometric patterns. His work often used large numbers of showgirls and props as fantasy elements in on-screen performances. It was fascinating seeing a style that is no longer used in modern day choreography and filming.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 14th October when Rose Sault will be giving us a 'hands on' talk on 'Straw Craft'. Visitors are very welcome and further information can be obtained from Penny Bailey through the link below. We meet in Yoxall Parish Hall at 7.30pm
