Summer Outing to Tissington Hall

The very wet weather did not dampen the spirits of the ladies of Yoxall WI as they arrived in Tissington for a tour of the Hall. Dividing into two groups, our guides gave a very informative commentary as we moved around the rooms.

Tissington is an early 17th-century Jacobean mansion house in Tissington, near Ashbourne and a Grade 2 listed building. The Fitzherberts, who are descended from the Norman family of Norbury Hall, acquired Tissington through marriage. The old moated manor at Tissington was replaced with the new mansion in 1609 by Francis Fitzherbert and remains the home of the Fitzherbert family. The current occupant is Sir Richard Ranulph Fitzherbert Bart. Sir Richard inherited the estate in 1989 and lives their with his wife, children and an assortment of animals. Tissington is unique in that it is one of only 300 homes in the country that can boast the fact that the descendants of the original builder still live there, 400 years later.

The main part of the building houses the Main Hall, the Dining Room, two State Drawing rooms and various other associated rooms. A Library and Billiard Room were added around 1900.The hall has many portraits and our guides were able to give us details of the characters. We were able to see the pretty, colourful gardens from inside the Hall but unfortunately, it was far too wet for us to venture outside. We all made a dash for the café and had an opportunity to catch up on everyone’s news. After coffee, and cake for some, we met up at a local pub and had a lovely lunch. All in all we had made the best of a very wet day!

Our next meeting is on Wednesday September 11th when we will have Glynis Myles giving a talk on Deaf awareness. We meet at 7.30pm in Yoxall Parish hall and visitors will be made very welcome. Further details can be obtained from Penny Bailey through the link below.
